In a 2007 North Dakota State University (NDSU) study conducted and published by Dr. Dave Franzen, Wet-Sol® and Wet-Sol Gro® reduced soil crusting in areas where soil crusting is a problem.
The results verify what we already know; that Wet-Sol® and Wet-Sol Gro® reduce surface tension between water and soil, which allows even penetration.
Crusting occurs when a hard rain, followed by a hot sun, bakes the top layer of the soil into a 'brick-hard' crust that seedlings cannot break through. Wet-Sol® breaks the surface tension of water which disperses the water from a hard rain deeper into the soil eliminating the fast evaporation that leads to crusting.
Soil crusting can be devastating for sugar beet farmers. If crusting occurs once the seedlings are up, they become very brittle and a strong wind can snap them off, making it necessary to replant.
The above results are for 2007 and will be further studied in 2008.
